Chapter 23

Nick

My legs bounce as we wait for the doctor to come into the room. I never thought I’d be this nervous to be sitting in the doctor’s office. Especially when I'm not the patient. I don’t have to do anything other than sit here.

“Nick, please stop. You’re making me nervous.” Kendra places her hand on my knee and stills my leg.

“This is going to be great. We get to find out how far along you are. There’s no reason for you to be nervous.”

“Well, if I shouldn’t be nervous, then there’s definitely no reason for you to be!”

The doctor walks in and takes a seat. She blabs on and on, but I don’t hear a word. I just want to know how far along Kendra is. I want to know how long I have to wait to meet my baby.

I wonder if we’re having a boy or a girl. I don’t want one more than the other. I just want our precious little baby to be healthy.

“Hey, Dad?” The doctor says, pulling me from my thoughts and amusement shines in her eyes. “Would you like to see your little baby?”

“Yes!” I practically leap out of my chair to peek at the ultrasound machine.

“I don’t think he heard a word I said, but he sure is excited!” She laughs. “Right here is your baby and there is the heart. Do you want to hear the heartbeat?”

“Yes,” we both whisper at the same time.

A woosh woosh fills the air with each heartbeat. I stare in amazement at the ultrasound monitor and the little white blob on the screen. I can't believe that’s our baby.

When I glance down at Kendra, she’s silently crying. I wipe the tears away and kiss her forehead, squeezing her hand.

I was afraid she wouldn’t want to have kids. I wouldn’t have blamed her after the childhood she had. If she didn’t want any, I wouldn’t have pushed her. I’d stand by her decision and enjoy my nieces and nephews, but I'm ecstatic she wants kids. Though I wouldn’t have demanded kids, I’d have been a little heartbroken to not have one my own.

“That’s our baby,” Kendra sobs quietly.

“It is. When can we find out if it’s a boy or girl?”

“Well… Your baby is measuring about nine weeks, so you have eleven more weeks until you can find out.”

“Ugh, this is going to be the longest eleven weeks ever!” I groan. Kendra laughs through her tears, her eyes lighting up with amusement.

“He had a hard enough time waiting five minutes for the pregnancy test.”

“The next thirty-one weeks will be the longest of your life, then.” The doctor laughs.

As soon as the doctor exits the room, Kendra hops off the bed and begins getting dressed. I watch her move around and take in how beautiful she is.

I’ve always been mesmerized by this woman, but now she’s my wife and the mother of my baby. She’s breathtaking and she’s all mine.

“Why are you staring at me like that?” Kendra quirks a brow as she tugs on her pants.
